- Rectangle and circle: Surface area multiplied by average water depth gives an approximate volume. Use the actual water depth, not the full wall height.
- Oval and kidney: Curved shapes are approximated. For a kidney shape, measure both wide sections as well as the length.
- Average depth: The shallow and deep depths are averaged. Shelves, steps, irregular slopes, and attached spas can change actual volume.
- Units: One cubic foot is 28.316846592 liters; one US liquid gallon is 3.785411784 liters. These are US gallons, not imperial gallons.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate pool gallons?
For a rectangular pool, multiply length × width × average depth in feet, then convert cubic feet to US liquid gallons. Other shapes use a surface-area approximation first.
How do I find average pool depth?
This tool uses (shallow depth + deep depth) ÷ 2. For complex floor profiles, divide the pool into sections or ask your pool professional for the measured volume.
How long will it take to fill my pool?
The bonus estimate assumes 9 US gallons per minute. Actual flow, pressure, interruptions, and filling restrictions can change the time.
How much will the water cost?
Edit the water rate per US gallon in Bonus Calculations. This excludes fixed charges, wastewater charges, delivery fees, and any tiered tariffs.
Can I use this to work out chemical doses?
Volume is only one input. Test the water and follow the specific product label and qualified guidance. This tool does not prescribe chemical doses or select a pump.
